2011-12 Program Highlights

El Sistema is a music program that began 30 years ago in Venezuela and currently serves over 300,000 students.  It has inspired social change by engaging young people in music.  Since the arrival of El Sistema star Gustavo Dudamel as conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the District and many community and arts organizations have launched El Sistema programs in southern California.
 
There are two main District initiatives:  the “Scholar’s Music Project” (a partnership with the Sweetwater Union High School District, Young Audiences, and the Bolles Arts Foundation) and the “Community Opus Project” (sponsored by the San Diego Youth Symphony).
