2007-08 Program Highlights
SUAVE Program -- SUAVE stands for Socios Unidos Para Artes Via Educación/United Communities for Arts in Education. The program started in 1994 and continued through the end of the 2005-2006 school year.
The SUAVE program was developed with four main goals:
- To provide teachers with quality professional development in the visual and performing arts
- To improve English language acquisition through arts-integrated language arts curriculum
- To experience grade-level Visual and Performing Arts standards
- To enhance artist knowledge of Visual and Performing Arts Standards and their application
Over the years that the district has had SUAVE, most, if not all, of our 17 elementary schools have participated. A model SUAVE school has been Central School. They planned and taught side-by-side with the coaches/mentors from the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, as well as attending additional staff development outside of the classroom. Eventually, classroom teachers could present integrated lessons on their own. They have continued using the strategies that they learned throughout the 12 years that the program was in existence.
During the last three years of the SUAVE program, three schools, Lincoln, Pioneer, and Central participated in a study involving English learners and SUAVE authored by Patti Saraniero. The findings were clear that those students who had the SUAVE experience had a significantly higher rate of improvement in their English proficiency then the comparison group who did not have the opportunity to have the SUAVE program.
