2009-10 Program Highlights

• Last year’s VAPA coaches trained every elementary teacher how to implement our district’s adopted music and art programs.  Our coaches exposed over 6,000 students to the power of music, art, and drama as forms of communication, expression, and education.  Using the programs Making Music, Art Connections, and The Drama Game File, this year’s elementary teaching staff  continues to value opportunities to expose our students to the California Visual and Performing Art Standards. 

  •  Middle Schools offer a variety of VAPA opportunities that include beginning band, advanced band, choir, ensemble, and art instruction.

  •  Art Docent – Parents and community volunteers use reproductions to bring artists and their famous creations to life in the classroom.  The program includes a presentation, discussion, and art project that addresses a specific style, theme, or subject matter. The lessons involve the imaginations of the students and increase their technical skills in the five areas of art appreciation.

  •  The Peter Pan Junior Theater is a volunteer organization that strives to provide every La Mesa-Spring Valley School District student an opportunity to experience a quality theatrical performance by producing a junior theater production once a year. Peter Pan Junior Theater also supports instruction of music and drama in each of the District's elementary and middle schools by making their theatrical resources available to all students and teaching staff.
