In Lakeside Union School District, standards have been in place for the four arts disciplines since 1998. The district has adopted music and visual arts curriculum for all elementary sites allocating $250,000 for expenditures. The Board of Trustees writes goals in the arts each year and believes the arts should be part of the core curriculum. Our elementary schools invest each year in hiring an Artist in Residence to work with 1 or 2 grade levels. Some of elementary sites run a great art supplementary program with volunteer art docents. A Lakeside parent who is an artist wrote the curriculum used and aligned all the lessons to the art standards. Lakeside is a founding member of the statewide Model Arts Program Network and San Diego Arts Network.

2009-10 Program Highlights

• Edu-dance ballroom Dancing for all 6th grade
• Expansion of La Jolla Playhouse, Young Audience Arts Academy to all school sites elementary schools
• High quality theatrical performance at all sites
• District-wide festival of arts (includes visual and performing arts)
• Middle school high quality band and orchestra groups, including steel drum percussion group and jazz band group

Other Information

• A strong arts program builds at the elementary sites with multiple artists-in-residence through Young Audiences, followed by varied offerings at the middle school including band, orchestra, drama, art, and dance.
• The partnership between Lakeside Union School District, La Jolla Playhouse, and City Moves results in multiple arts academies at each middle school and integration of the arts into core curriculum.
• Lakeside Union School District has received two California School Boards Association Golden Bell Awards for their Lakeside Education and Arts Partnership, and Run for the Arts.
