In Lakeside Union School District, standards have been in place for the four arts disciplines since 1998. Each year the district focuses on one discipline for professional development. All elementary teachers and selected middle school teachers participate in a minimum of eight hours of professional development. The district has adopted music and visual arts curriculum for all elementary sites allocating $250,000 for expenditures. The Board writes goals in the arts each year and believes the arts should be part of the core curriculum. The Lakeside Education and Arts Partnership (LEAP) has been meeting monthly since 1996, molding the arts programs and structuring our implementation of curriculum and professional growth. Lakeside is a founding member of the statewide Model Arts Program Network and San Diego Arts Network.

2007-08 Program Highlights

• Edudance ballroom Dancing for all 6th grade
• Expansion of La Jolla Playhouse, SDCOE, Young Audience Arts Academy to elementary schools
• Expansion of theatrical performance at all sites (quality has gone up), festival of art (quality has been upped)
• Committee formed for monies; Board supported plan developed

Other Information

• A strong arts program builds in the elementary sites with multiple artists-in-residence through Young Audiences, followed by varied offerings at the middle school including band, orchestra, drama, art, and dance.
• The partnership between San Diego County Office of Education, Lakeside Union School District, La Jolla Playhouse, and City Moves resulted in multiple arts academies at each middle school.
• Bose Corporation continues to be our partner, providing integrated curriculum, professional development, and student field trip experiences based on the science of sound and music for our district.
• Lakeside Union School District has received two California School Boards Association Golden Bell Awards for their Lakeside Education and Arts Partnership, and Run for the Arts.
