2007-08 Program Highlights

  • Arts: Art-In-Action parent docents bring an art print into the classroom a week before their presentation. They lead a discussion with the students presenting art terminology, then they do an art lesson with the students. This is a monthly program in grades K-8. Docents complete a training program before they begin. A Music-In-Action retired music educator comes in to our 4th and 5th grade classrooms once a week and uses rhythm instruments and grade-level music with students. In 2nd and 3rd grades, we have classroom teachers who teach music to their students. The Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program is a five-year program. Each week a new composition is introduced to all students in our school. They listen to the same piece for a week. The program is scripted and is accompanied by relevant learning activities tied to the music.
  • Playwriting Residency: The "Playwright's Project," a statewide arts education organization based in San Diego, will assign a professional teaching actor to our 7th and 8th grade classrooms for eight one-hour classes to teach script writing and the five basic elements of drama. At the final class, professional actors will visit to read and perform selected student scripts. For Border Voices-Artist in Residence, a poet comes to our 1st through 8th grade classes for five sessions. The poet works with students on writing techniques. Students’ poems are selected for submission in county and state anthologies.
  • Our PTA sponsors one free arts performance a year for K-8 classrooms. As a district we have a minimum of three assemblies a year, which are from at least two different arts disciplines. Through Arts Work grant funding, the "Suave Program" (out of the Escondido Center for the Arts) strives to unite the community by training art coaches to work with teachers to infuse arts into student lessons in math, science, literature, and social studies.
